Why a Community Health and Wellness Directory?

Philadelphia is known for its thriving healthcare industry. In fact, we are home to the nation’s first hospital – Pennsylvania Hospital.  Philly is also the poorest big city in America, with a diverse and dynamic population (approximately 70% people of color) where one’s zip code often predicts access to healthcare and lifespan and health outcomes.

The city’s persistent, pervasive healthcare disparities contribute to  consistently imbalanced health outcomes. For example, countless studies have shown that, regardless of education, income or health insurance, Black Americans often get sicker earlier and die more frequently from preventable illnesses.

To address this inequity, WURD Radio, Philadelphia’s leading talk radio station, is launching a regional directory inspired by our founder, Walter P. Lomax Jr., M.D., a trailblazing physician who was committed to bringing high quality, culturally sensitive care to underserved communities in and around Philadelphia where he practiced for 32 years.

This digital directory will feature doctors from throughout the region, across multiple specialties and health systems, who are committed to serving patients and communities traditionally underserved. Additionally, this digital directory will include dynamic audio, video and text content to further educate and empower healthcare consumers. We will highlight audio from WURD Radio interviews with health experts and advocates about disease prevention, management, treatment, and new research.

The Community Health and Wellness Directory will be marketed across all WURD platforms – on air, online, through social media and at our many community outreach events.

We hope you will join us in this important initiative to enhance the health and wellness of Philadelphia’s communities.

To participate in the Directory, any licensed physician in the greater Philadelphia area may submit professional information, including an institutional biography, and also may describe the physician’s specific background, training, and experience with and commitment to treating patients and communities historically and currently underserved.  Inclusion in the directory is free-of-charge and open to all such physicians.
